Associate Professor Steve Keen was one of the few economists who predicted the Global Financial Crisis, and his warnings about the danger of private debt have made him a public figure in Australia. His claims that excessive lending was the real cause of Australia's high house prices-and that prices were likely to fall 40% over 10-15 years (as happened in Japan) led to a bet with Macquarie Bank economist Rory Robertson.
Steve lost part of the bet (that house prices wouldn't exceed their September 2008 peak) and is walking from Parliament House to Mt Kosciousko in April. He hopes to use the walk to raise awareness about the absurd state of Australia's housing market, and to raise funds to help the homeless.
Steve is an Associate Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Western Sydney, the author of Debunking Economics: the naked emperor of the social sciences. He is a world-recognised critic of conventional economic theory, which he says helped cause the Global Financial Crisis.
